IFTDO is the most multinational, multicultural Training and Development organization in the world with a truly diverse Board of Directors leading the organization.

Our members form a highly diverse network of human resource management and development organizations globally, linking HR professionals in HR societies, corporations, universities, consultancies, government organizations and enterprises.

Through its member organisations, IFTDO currently represents more than 500,000 professionals in over 30 countries.

1st International Conference - Geneva, Switzerland, resulting in a decision to set up a world body


2nd International Conference – Bath, UK, where 23 training and development membership organizations from 20 countries sign the document, to form IFTDO.


Incorporated in USA as non-profit organization with the Secretariat provided by ASTD (American Society for Training and Development), now ATD (Association for Talent Development)


Associate Members category introduced, resulting in total Membership Numbers for that year, as follows: 27 Full Members, 4 Associate Members, 3 Regional Members, 4 Institutional Members


Registered Office in Washington DC, USA, since ASTD Secretariat not available after 1980


Secretariat provided by International Institute of Human Resource Development; Newsletter - IFTDO News started; Strategy Paper prepared and approved by the Board; Conference Coordination Group (later known as the Conference Coordination Committee) established; Council (body of IFTDO Full Members) resolution to set up new company; Contact established with International agencies-UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) and ILO (International Labor Organization, an agency of the United Nations)


Registered in England and Wales (UK) as private company and charity, the International Federation of Training and Development Organizations; Office support provided by Institute of Training and Development, UK (later known as Institute of Personnel and Development and, now, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development)

1985/ 1986

Constitution amended to have one Associate Member Representative in the Board


1st AM (Associate Member) Representative joins the Board


Constitution amended to provide for 4 Representatives of Associate Members one from each of the following Regions – Africa, Americas, Asia/Pacific, Europe;) Task Forces/Committees formed for various activities


Full-time Secretariat established; 1st AM (Associate Member) Representative joins the Board


25th Anniversary World Conference in Cairo, Egypt; 25th Anniversary book published; Office support provided by SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management)


IFTDO gets Consultative Status with UN ECOSOC (United Nations Economic and Social Council) and ILO (International Labor Organization, an agency of the United Nations)


Constitution amended to provide for Reciprocal Membership


IFTDO Global HRD Awards program launched with awards sponsored through donations initially by the Court of the Prime Minister of Bahrain and later by the Dubai Police Academy


40th Anniversary Conference in Warsaw, Poland; 40th Anniversary book published

The 42nd IFTDO World Conference was hosted by the Indian Society for Training and Development (ISTD) and held in New Delhi, India.  The Federation was honored to have the President of India participate in the opening of the conference and present the 2013 IFTDO Global HRD Awards.
